No, This Is Definitely The Best Smoothie Print E-mail
Wednesday, 27 July 2011

As I’ve written recently, I’m in full smoothie swing this summer and have been pulverizing fruit left and right. Recently, though, a mid-afternoon crabby episode drove me to experiment with, um, other ingredients, and I’ve hit on the absolute best smoothie ever.

If you like chocolate, of course.

One caveat here – I use a half can (about six to eight ounces) of coconut milk – the thick stuff that’s full of fat but oh-so-good. So you should like the taste of coconut before you make this. I personally love the ice cream made with coconut milk, so this is, to me, like a chocolate milkshake. Of course, if you’re not dairy-allergic like I am, you can use cow’s milk instead, but make sure it’s got some fat in there for some delicious oomph.

Here ‘tis –

Big News On the Autism Front Print E-mail
Monday, 11 July 2011

In a study just released a few days ago that many people in the medical community are calling a "complete game changer" on how they deal with autism, environmental influence was found to play a much higher role in causing autism than has ever been thought.

The study found that about 38% of autism risk comes from genetics - with environmental factors accounting for an astonishing 63%. The New York Times, as well as many other national papers, published articles that have rocked many people's worlds. The medical community will be absorbing this impact for years, and the study will result, many experts feel, in a complete paradigm shift in how people look at - and strive to prevent - autism.

And if that's not enough, another study just recently released shows that taking a prenatal vitamin at the time of conception cuts the risk of autism in HALF. Half. Talk about big numbers.

I encourage you to take some time and read the articles - it's big stuff happening right now.

New Car Seat Recommendations Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 March 2011

On March 21, the American Academy of Pediatricians released a statement issuing new recommendations for car-seat use for babies and children. The biggest change? They now recommend rear-facing car seats until children are AT LEAST TWO years old. Yep, TWO, not one.

Read up on it on this link; there’s also a great video from the car seat lady (a pediatrician and certified child passenger safety instructor) that shows multiple crash tests done with child-sized dummies in varying positions. And parents of school-age children, you don't get off scott-free either; they recommend booster seats until the child is somewhere between EIGHT and TWELVE years old. Yep.

Let’s just say that I’m glad my youngest is four, and I don’t have to persuade her to turn back around.

The Kindness Jar Print E-mail
Monday, 29 November 2010

So I read about this project a mom came up with for her kids – the “Good Deeds Jar” – where the kids worked at a list of good deeds to show Santa how great they are. You know I love a project that keeps my girls focused on the real meaning of Christmas, so I played around with the original idea and have come up with the Kindness Jar.

De-Toxing Print E-mail
Monday, 28 June 2010

My articles on sunscreen from last week have prompted some posts and emails with further questions, asking about other chemicals or “what if . . .” or “what about . . .” and I see that the sunscreen thing is just the tip of the ice berg.

Now I know I’m way more hippie or crunchy or whatever-y than a lot of you, and I’m not going to preach at you to get rid of your air conditioners and dryers and go back to wood-burning stoves (they emit too many pollutants to be a viable main cook source anyway). But I am getting questions from girlfriends and readers, and thought I’d direct you to a couple different articles to get you started.
