Mommy Tea Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 May 2008

I make this one tea periodically – it’s a yogi tea, tastes like the chai tea lattes you buy at Starbucks minus the sugar and milk. Anyway, I like it because there’s no caffeine and it’s mildly sweet on its own, so I make a few quarts at a time to keep in the fridge, adding honey and milk as needed.

At any rate, a friend of mine is in her first trimester and having a hard time with it nausea-wise. I gave her a quart of the tea – one of the primary ingredients is ginger, and I thought it’d settle her stomach. The result? Two enthusiastic thumbs up, and a request for more tea. Kindly enough, she refrained from calling me at 2 a.m. when she actually ran out, and waited until the next day to make the request.

So I thought I’d post the recipe here – it’s an awesome “tea” for morning sickness, or for drinking in general. I think it’s also a great drink for kids; Maddie doesn’t drink anything but milk and water, and letting her have some of this, either mixed in milk or plain, makes her feel very grown up. And as I said, I make it for myself often; I love the cinnamon and ginger in it. Make a bunch, store it in the fridge, and you can drink it cold or heat it up – whatever sounds good to you.

Better yet, make a bunch and give it to your preggers girlfriend. She’ll be weeping with gratitude.

Yogi Tea

3 quarts water
20 cloves
20 whole green cardamom pods, crushed
20 whole black peppercorns
5 whole sticks cinnamon
3 to 5 slices fresh gingerroot (I use really big slices because I love ginger!)

Combine all ingredients, bring to a boil, then simmer for an hour. If you’d like, add one black tea bag to steep with it for some caffeine. Remove the optional tea bag, turn off and let sit – anywhere from two to three hours to overnight (I usually do overnight, since I like it strong so I can add water if I want).
Strain the tea and discard the used spices (this will make your disposal or trash smell awesome!)
Store in the fridge until needed. You can add milk and honey if you like when you’re ready to drink it – I’d heat it up before adding the milk if you’re going to drink it hot.

Enjoy!
