Happy Birthday to . . . Me?

My first birthday as a mother.  Here’s what I did:

I slept late.  I got up and ate pancakes.  I took a long hot bath.

Then I woke up.

It’s amazing how Madeleine’s not that interested in taking the day off from being a baby so I can have some free time.  Everyone keeps calling me and laughing, commiserating with me over how different this celebration day is for me.  You want to know a secret, though?  I don’t really mind.  Yes, the sleeping in thing would have been great.  But she’s a good kid and I love hanging out with her.  Perhaps it’s just because I’ve been spending the last four and a half months serving someone else almost constantly, but the idea of thinking only of myself for 24 hours is so decadent, it’s a bit obscene, and I’m not really sure how I’d even fill all that free time.  I’ve had a really great birthday:  I still got to do the present thing with Brian and my mom, and we watched a movie in celebration (though that was interrupted by Madeleine’s 45 minute bedtime routine), and my mommy still made me a cake.

Madeleine’s gift to me?  A box of chocolates by Jacques Torres, my favorite chocolates in the whole world.  I’m telling you, this kid’s got class.  Though in a way, it’s a gift for herself, too, since she’ll be partaking of them in a couple hours . . . she’s a crafty one.
