Compassion For All Things, Living Or Inflated
File this under How Cute Is My Kid:
We’ve got a box in the corner of the
living room that houses Maddie’s various balls. It’s
also home to whatever balloons she currently has blown up, and
Madeleine was browsing through the collection the other day when
she spied an old favorite – a formerly shiny gold balloon,
once filled with helium and flying gloriously with a lovely satin
ribbon, now shriveled, earth-bound and wallowing in its own
tattered tail. Maddie picked it up and said, “Daddy, make it
fly again!”
“Oh, kiddo,” he replied, “I don’t think
that balloon’s going to fly again. It’s looking pretty
sad. But you can play with it the way it is.”
She stared at it for a few moments, picked it up, and started
dancing around. She then cuddled it to her chest, patting it on its
back, and saying, “It’s ok. Shhh. It’s ok.”
“Baby girl, what are you doing?” I asked in
bewilderment.
“It’s sad,” she replied solemnly. “Maybe I
make it feel better and it will fly again. There, there.”
I love my daughter.
