A Safer Halloween

Two things –

First, there’s an email going around about a href="http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/coins.asp"
target="_blank">candy recall
. Sherwood brand Pirate’s
Gold Milk Chocolate coins, sold in bulk in Costco and other stores,
are being recalled because of levels of melamine found in them, a
toxic chemical found recently in several Chinese exports.

This is a true recall, and one that should
get circulated widely – but in CANADA, not in the U.S. The
CPSC has issued no recall here in the United States for any
chocolate coins, and Sherwood has issued a href="http://www.sherwoodbrands.com/Safety/productsafety1.html"
target="_blank">statement
asserting that there have been no
tainted coins sold in the U.S. However, if you have read all of the
articles and statements issued and are still concerned, you are
welcome to weed the chocolate pirate coins out of your kid’s
Halloween booty on Friday and get rid of them.

Second, since it is Halloween on Friday, I encourage you to review
a few href="http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09029.html"
target="_blank">safety tips
for Halloween. Most if
it’s common sense stuff – make sure costumes are
well-fitting and safe to walk around in, check candy before
allowing kids to eat it, that sort of thing – but these tips
always bear repeating.

Is everyone ready for the big day? Maddie’s in a fever of
excitement, and hopefully I’ll have lots of fantastic
pictures for you to see after the weekend. I’m still not sure
what we’ll do with all the candy; probably let her have a
couple pieces, then make a large portion of it
“disappear” over night, the remainder to be used as
potty rewards and treats. But we still haven’t decided.
Cora’s looking forward to the day as well, even though she
doesn’t get candy; she’s already worn her costume a
couple times and practices walking around with her pumpkin bucket,
putting her own things in.

Anyway, everyone have a safe and fun Halloween, and I’ll see
you on the other side!
