God Help Us, We're Pulling The Plug

Yesterday was Cora’s last official
day on the pacifier.

Cue doomsday music.

Yep, it’s time. The doctor told us
we needed to pull the paci because her teeth and soft palate are
forming incorrectly, and that was a week and a half ago. We
immediately cut her back to only naps and night-night: no daytime
cuddles or “check-ins” any more. And for the most part,
Cora’s done pretty well, though she has occasionally thrown
herself on the floor sobbing, “I need my pacifier to help me
calm down!” And then there was the morning very soon after we
restricted the thing, when she marched around pointing at her mouth
and yelling, “MY PACIFIER BELONGS IN MY MOUTH! MY PACIFIER
BELONGS IN MY MOUTH! MY PACIFIER BELONGS IN MY MOUTH!” All
she needed to complete the protest look was a placard and a Mean
Mommy to burn in effigy.

But on the whole she’s done well, so we know it’s time
to go cold turkey. I spent all day Monday saying,
“Today’s your last nap with the pacifier!
Tonight’s your last night-night with the pacifier!” And
she looked at me and nodded calmly, letting me know she really
wasn’t listening.

So pray for us today. I’m assuming that naptime will be a
wash, but hopefully she’ll be so pooped from not napping that
she’ll crash at night and sleep at least part of the time.
I’m not looking forward to a few nights of multiple wakings,
but it’s lose sleep now or lose cash at the dentist later.

Check in with me in a couple nights – I may opt for the cash
thing.
