Graduation Blues

Yep, Maddie’s officially a grad now.
She’s got the whole summer to hang out with her friends, go
to the mall, and get ready for school in the fall.

Wait, didn’t I just describe my senior year summer?

The ceremony wasn’t too bad, so
thanks for all the votes of confidence and notes of encouragement.
They did actually call each child’s name, hand her a diploma,
and shake her hand. Of course, the diploma was just a rolled-up
piece of blank paper . . . but still. Those kids with their
mortarboard hats on looked pretty darn cute doing the graduation
thing.

Some of the children are already missing school, and Maddie’s
definitely one of them. She ran towards Sunday school with
undisguised relief yesterday: organization! Crafts! Rules to be
followed and children with which to interact! And she hasn’t
even been out of school but a couple of days.

But as much as Maddie’s missing her friends and preschool,
she’s also wildly excited about kindergarten and getting to
go there soon. Every time we drive past the elementary school, she
screams out, “Hi, Maddie’s school!” And
she’s already pestering me to go shopping for her school bag
and fall wardrobe.

As for me, I’m already beginning to miss preschool as well,
as the looooooooooong, hot, empty days of summer stretch out before
us.

Playdate, anyone? Please??
