Toys, Schmoys
Cora spent Wednesday morning vomiting
– her usual MO, you know, when she’s got strep throat.
So I was kept busy doing loads of laundry and trying to pin a
fretful girl down to the bed – which I did with copious
episodes of Dragon Tales. I was, needless to say, wiped out.
But one good thing did come out of Wednesday – for whatever
reason, Cora chose that day to exclusively use the potty. Yes, she
wore one tired diaper the whole day, and as sick as she was, she
dragged herself to the bathroom every time. When she went to bed
that night, I told her we’d get something special to
celebrate the next day.
Yes, we’re firm believers in bribery
for potty training. When Maddie (finally) went one whole day on the
potty, we went to Toys R Us and she picked out a Handy Manny tool
set. So when Cora woke up Thursday morning and we began planning
her day, I said, “Where would you like to go today?”
“To get ice cream!” she replied instantly.
“Honey, remember, you can get a treat today for using the
potty all day yesterday!” I reminded.
“I know! I want to get ice cream!”
“I thought maybe we’d do what Maddie did, remember? We
could go to a toy store and pick out a small toy for you!” I
said.
Cora looked at me. “Mommy, I’ve got toys. What I
don’t have, is ice cream.”
I couldn’t argue with that.
So we walked through a lovely drizzle to our local Braums, and
ended up spending a fun morning together – walking through
the mud, splashing in puddles, pushing the street-signal buttons.
Oh yes, and eating ice cream at 10 o’clock in the
morning.
