She's Got A Way About Her Words

Yesterday morning I returned home from
dropping Brian off at the train station to see Maddie’s cat
tearing down the stairs as if running from a room full of rocking
chairs. Maddie followed after her, shaking her head forgivingly and
saying, “Surely there is an adventurous spirit within that
cat this morning. I speak this with certainty.”

Coincidentally, Maddie is hard-pressed to be found without a book
within her hands.

Being a big bookworm myself, I confess
that I have smiled happily at the sight of Maddie going everywhere
with a book: riding in the car to run errands, during her quiet
time, even walking to the pool. But she’s been on a tear
reading beautiful classics like “Secret Garden”, and
the poetical phrasing is starting to seep into her everyday
language. Add to this the fact that we’ve been talking about
what similes are, and we’ve got a hotbed of literary
hyperbole over here.

Yesterday afternoon Cora was in a bit of a snit over something or
other, and Maddie shook her head and said, “A dark cloud of
gloom hangs over Cora, like a clingy mist of sadness.”

What?

I’m sure this will pass when she starts re-reading all her
Junie B. Jones books, but for right now I’m actually having a
great time listening to my little orator comment on everything from
the weather (“the heat presses on me like a limp
sandwich”) to dinner (“this is not, in truth, my
favorite, though I will with willingness try it if you’d
prefer.”)

If that girl collected an allowance by the syllable, she’d be
a rich girl.
