Creature Of Habits

I love the changing of the seasons. It doesn’t even really matter which change we’re talking about – I love them all. Every winter I feel a yearning for hanging out on the grass on a warm spring day, watching trees bud and listening to birds sing. Then after a few months of that, I become restless and develop a yen for sunscreen and lazy pool time – those endless days that seem to stretch on forever, when your kids scream and play for hours and you laugh and chat desultorily with your girlfriends.

And then I have a hankering for the fall.

Summer gets hot, the kids get bored and testy, and I’m tired of wearing shorts. I’m ready for a little more skin coverage, a change of scent from the melted tar that permeates summer in the south. Bring on autumn!

Cool weather really came for us this weekend, and I’m embracing it wholeheartedly. Sure, it’ll probably leave in a couple days and instead of highs in the 60s we’ll be back to highs in the 90s one last time. But for now, I’m enjoying the weather mightily.

I know my girls have inherited this gene from me: Saturday when the weather cooled off, the thermometer said 64 outside and Maddie was already begging for a fire in the fireplace. Last night I put a pot of mulled cider on the stove and sniffed the air rapturously while enjoying – yes, it’s true – a crackling fireplace. I’m snuggled in my beat-up-but-oh-so-warm cashmere cardigan that I shuffle around the house in half the year, and loving this change of season.

Now, talk to me in a few months . . .
