Feeding Souls, One Cookie At A Time

This past weekend I brought a plate of gluten-free snacks as a thank-you gift to the owners of our favorite farm getaway; Mrs. Farmer, who requires the gluten-free, smiled happily and said, “Oh, this just makes me feel so good! I feel so known by you!”

Tuesday evening I dropped off a plate of blondies with a friend; the blondies were destined for a family I don’t know but I’ve heard is in dire straits right now.

Wednesday afternoon my kids came home from school and said, “What’s for a snack?” I replied, “Well, I did happen to make some banana bread for you this morning.” “AWESOME!” the girls shrieked as they ran for the kitchen.

Last night after dinner I dropped off a plate of red velvet cupcakes at our local auto repair shop; the guys had worked on our mini-van all weekend and I knew red velvet’s a big hit around there. Home-baked treats courtesy of Gamma and Cora’s hard work earlier in the week were much appreciated by the guys.

And then when I got home from dropping off the cupcakes I put together a dozen chicken burritos to go into the freezer for future lunches for my hubby, and baked up a pan of KIND fruit-and-nut bars for a friend who’s struggling a bit right now and needs a pick-me-up.

As I started the bars just before bedtime, Cora saw me getting out ingredients and said, “Who are those for?” very matter-of-factly. I love that she assumed we were cooking to give away.

My girls may well grow up to believe that sometimes, love comes from the kitchen and not the heart.

And I’m ok with that.
