D Day
It’s D Day in our house.
That’s D for Denial, baby.
Today is Maddie’s last day of kindergarten and I’m so
excited my tail is perpetually wagging. But I have to keep my
excitement in check, because acknowledging the extent of my
excitement means I would have to acknowledge that Maddie is
finishing kindergarten.
So I shove those unpleasant thoughts way
down deep into some dark part of my soul and ignore it, and focus
on the good part:
My baby is about to be all mine again!!
I can’t wait. No 7:30 a.m. rush to leave the house. No
endless lunch bags and snack bags and school water bottles. No
homework. No schedule!
I know I’m not the only one excited; yesterday morning I woke
Cora up so we could take Maddie to school, and she rolled over
sleepily and said, “I need to get downstairs. I need me some
Sissy lovin’.” And as she dragged herself down the
stairs, she mused, “When school gets out, I’ll be able
to get Sissy lovin’ whenever I want!”
Yesterday afternoon, to celebrate, Maddie cut her hair short again,
so it swings in a long bob below her chin. I can see in her eyes
she feels quite grown-up. And in solidarity, Cora demanded a cut
too, and it’s startling how much older it made Cora as well.
My babies are growing up!
No. Don’t think about that. Focus on the fact that in a few
short hours they will be yours, all yours!!!!
